We all know a spa day is good for the soul, but many “on the go” lifestyles don’t allow for the time. This lifestyle is taxing on our mental and physical health, and sometimes we just need to take a day to pause! Spas have been scientifically proven to promote relaxation, boost self-confidence, and leave your body feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Just think…no kids, no phone, no distractions, just you taking care of yourself and enjoying CBD in the Spa!

Now, just imagine that the overall “spa experience” was accompanied by CBD. CBD is a product that has been clinically proven to help with anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and more! Because of CBD’s endless health benefits, everyone has been hopping on the trend. From facemasks and skincare to coffee, and smoothie recipes, CBD is everywhere!

Spas have been one of the latest industries to hop on the CBD trend, as this product would add extra anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits to spa therapies and treatments. Overall CBD + Spa treatments = a recipe for your body’s success.

Before we get into different CBD treatments and therapies they are beginning to provide at spas, let’s talk about what CBD is, and why it will help you have your dream spa day!

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of the main phytochemicals found within the Cannabis plant. CBD contains more energizing properties, compared to CBG with more relaxing properties, and THC which has a psychoactive effect on the body.

The main difference between cannabis products is the amount of THC in each. CBD refers to cannabis that contains < 0.3% THC, therefore, CBD does NOT produce a high because of its low THC content. Additionally, CBD can be found within the hemp plant which generally contains more CBD than THC. Cannabis plants on the other hand contain more THC!

It is also important to note that Hemp-derived CBD products with < 0.3% THC are legal federally but still illegal under some state laws. Cannabis-derived CBD products are illegal federally but legal under some state laws. That being said, it is always best to check your local legislation before moving ahead and using CBD products.

CBD at the Spa

Now that you are familiar with the basics of CBD, it should be evident why spas and other wellness spaces have been using this product within their services and treatments. In 2019, the International Spa Association reported that 18% of spas featured CBD, and in 2018, ⅓ of spas at resort hotels included CBD products in treatments, and 16% of day spas featured CBD products — yet these numbers will continue to grow!

Many spas around the country are focused on incorporating this product effectively and safely. After a 2019 Spa summit, Hemp Industry Daily followed up with several spa directors and a CBD producer to share some tips on how spas should go about incorporating CBD products.

Here were some of their main points:

  • When buying CBD products, “pay attention to how the workforce is treated by the company and how the land is treated” – Kate Morrison, Ojai Valley Inn, California
  • Organic certification and sustainable production methods are must-haves for CBD spa products
  • Spas aren’t just looking for well made CBD products but also vendors that will send staff to run in-person training sessions for the spa’s therapists
  • Try to go THC-free! It might be an extra step but it removes any possibility of exposing clients to trace amounts of THC
  • Check the ingredients in CBD products sent from vendors! Some skincare products may contain other ingredients!

Each step of the CBD process, from growing the plant, to manufacturing, to applying the product on your face, body, hands, or feet, has been thoroughly researched by scientists and spa professionals to assure you of your safety!

CBD Spa Treatments

Many spas around the country have developed several effective forms of therapy and treatment with CBD. Particularly beneficial are the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD which can help relieve:

  • Inflammation of :
    • The joints
    • Digestive tract
    • The skin / reducing the inflamed appearance of acne

In addition to this, CBD is especially attractive to spas because as CBD Today notes, “Hemp Plants, which are sourced for CBD oil, also have antiseptic and antibacterial benefits that can help soothe acne-prone and sunburnt skin. Hemp oil also contains Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids that help moisturize the skin, making it a natural addition to massage oil and lotion blends.”

CBD has a lot to offer at the spa. Some of the most common CBD treatments include:

  • Facials
  • Manicure and pedicure
  • Massages
  • Baths/body soaks

Let’s get into what each treatment includes, and how you might be able to do it at home!

CBD Facials

CBD oil is rich in vitamins A, D, and E, containing essential fatty acids and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s not a surprise that CBD facials are one of the MOST popular spa treatments today! This product can be your “one-stop-shop” for all your skincare needs, such as treating:

  • Skin Redness
  • Aging Skin
  • Wrinkles
  • Dry Skin

Spas today are utilizing these benefits of CBD on the skin in two main ways

  • Hydrafacials
  • Relaxation facials

A CBD hydrafacial is similar to a regular hydrafacial, which involves three main steps:

  • Cleanse and peel
  • Extraction and hydration
  • Fusion and protection

During the cleanse and peel step, the skin will be exfoliated. This is a process that removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin and unclogs the pores. Next is extraction and hydration, with a HydraFacial tip, “gunk” is extracted from the pores, and simultaneously hydrated with moisturizers.

During the last step, fusion, and protection, the treatment will finish with serums, in this case, CBD serums. Adding CBD serum after doing all the “dirty work” allows the product to penetrate deep within the skin. This then allows its antioxidants and vitamins to settle, providing your skin with a refreshed, revitalized, and hydrating glow!

A CBD relaxation facial involves “mood-lifting massage techniques,” in which therapists will work CBD oils into the skin. This type of facial has become extremely popular by Hungarian facialist, Idli Pekar.

These facials begin with the standard facial procedures: exfoliation and moisturizing under LED lights. The therapist will then either use electric therapy or will begin to massage the skin to relieve built-up tension. After the massage, CBD creams and oils will be rubbed into the skin to hydrate and reduce inflammation. This is the standard process, however, Pekar also uses oxygen therapy to relieve excess stress and tension.

While these facials can get pretty pricey, you could go the DIY route at home by investing in quality CBD skincare products and developing a skincare routine. While the products are still expensive, you would be able to use them more them once unlike at the spa.

CBD Mani-Pedi

Who doesn’t love a good mani-pedi? They are a MUST when it comes to self-care. That is why CBD mani-pedis are now offered at spas and nail salons all across the country.

Manicures

The standard manicure process usually involves filing, soaking, treating the cuticles, a hand massage, applying a base coat, polish, and then a topcoat! A CBD manicure follows the same process but uses CBD products instead. For example, because CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can offer pain relief from arthritic conditions, that mini-hand massage that accompanies the manicure would yield even greater benefits with a CBD-infused hand-lotion.

As previously mentioned, CBD has miraculous healing effects on the skin. Because of its antioxidant properties, CBD can prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles. We normally associate these aging effects with the face, but our hands and fingers are just as susceptible to these effects as well! A CBD manicure could be a way for your hands to look youthful.

Pedicures

Our feet carry us around all day, literally. Pedicures are one of the best ways to take care of your feet, and adding CBD to the equation can make your trip to the nail salon unforgettable.

Similar to manicures, CBD pedicures follow the standard process but instead utilize CBD products. For example, when starting off with a warm foot soak, your nail artist may add a CBD bath bomb or bath salts to the water. The same goes for the exfoliation and moisturizing/massage stage. The nail artists may swap the standard foot scrub for a CBD sugar scrub, or swap a standard cream or lotion for a CBD infused one.

While these swaps can provide the same anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and pain-relieving benefits as mentioned above, these products often come with an upcharge. Additionally, some nail artists use so little of the products that they cannot actually penetrate into the skin! So make sure you know what it is you are really paying for when you walk into the salon!

Most CBD services come at a pricey cost, so again you could opt for an at-home mani-pedi by buying your own CBD products! Turn the hot water on in your bathtub, add a CBD bath bomb, give your feet a nice exfoliation with a CBD sugar scrub!

But if you don’t mind investing a few more dollars into this treatment, this infused pedicure will be worth the try!

CBD Massages

Nothing feels quite as relaxing as a trained professional working through and relieving your body of built-up soreness, tightness, and pain. Massage therapy has been proven to relieve pain, reduce stress, increase relaxation, calm anxiety and depression, and overall aid your general wellbeing.

Like many other CBD spa treatments, CBD massage therapy is a standard massage performed with CBD-infused oils, creams, and lotions — enhancing all the previously mentioned benefits of massage therapy!

One reason why this adding CBD is beneficial for the body needs a brief scientific explanation:

The body has an endocannabinoid system, composed of CB1 and CB2 receptors, which helps maintain homeostatic balance. CB1 receptors are found in the brain, and CB2 receptors are found in other parts of the body. CBD binds to CB2 receptors — and as the Spa Industry Association notes, “When you apply CBD massage oil to the skin, it attaches to the CB2 receptors and causes a homeostatic process that combats pain and inflammation. It also releases tension causing relaxation.”

After the masseuse gets to work, the CBD takes over. The anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties of CBD reduces inflammation within muscles and joints, while the massage therapist is working. CBD can also enhance the relaxed state of mind people enter during a massage.

Some of the benefits from CBD massage therapy include:

  • Calming inflammation
  • Reducing chronic pain
  • Relieving tension

It’s hard to replicate the experience of a CBD massage at home, and the benefits of a professional CBD massage are reason alone to try this out!

CBD Baths and Body Soaks

A hot bath is a convenient luxury we can take advantage of at the end of a long day. Like many of the treatments mentioned above, a hot bath can too be enhanced by CBD, all thanks to the invention of CBD bath bombs and salts!

There has been minimal scientific research done to explore the benefits of these bath products, but as previously mentioned, there is no doubt CBD has a calming effect on the mind and body, and that it helps soothe and rehydrate the skin!

Many spas around the country are offering luxury CBD bath and body soaks, but you can also do this within the comfort of your own home.

All you need to do is:

  1. Fill up a bathtub with warm water
  2. Drop the CBD bath bomb in
  3. Wait for it to dissolve
  4. Get in the bath!

Creating a serene spa experience is that easy!
