What is CBD?
Before we get into discussing how drinking CBD-infused smoothies can help athletes recover, let’s talk about what exactly CBD is.
Cannabidiol or CBD is a chemical compound (cannabinoid) that is found in cannabis and is used extensively for its healing benefits. It is generally obtained from the hemp plant- a cannabis strain.
Similar to other cannabinoids, CBD works alongside our endocannabinoid system (ECS), boosting it with many benefits. The ECS’s biological purposes include the regulation of our appetite, swelling, motor control, emotional state, memory, immune function, sleep, discomfort, and pleasure reaction. When CBD goes into the body, it helps the ECS deal with numerous imbalances at once.
CBD can be useful for patients suffering from chronic pain such as arthritis, epilepsy, nausea, etc. Unlike THC, which is a psychoactive compound, CBD will not get you high. This is one of the main reasons why CBD medicines and CBD-infused products with a small amount of THC content have been made legal in most states.
CBD can also reduce an outstanding amount of swelling in the body, making it the perfect solution for athletes who need something to ease their pain. However, there is so much more to CBD than just a simple way to relieve pain and swelling in the body.
Benefits of CBD-Infused Smoothies
If you are an athlete that trains diligently, your body will insist on a proper meal to speed up the recovery process. It makes sense that a lot of athletes and coaches drink protein shakes to not only increase their performance, but also help their muscles heal faster. If you have not incorporated drinking CBD-infused smoothies into your post-training meals, consider these benefits:
Quicker Muscle Recovery
Research reveals that CBD has significant benefits that could improve athletic performance and speed up the recovery process. Drinking a CBD-infused smoothie gives your body the necessary fuel and nutrients to recuperate faster from a usual strenuous workout. This is crucial because when you work out, your body goes through a natural procedure of repairing muscle tissues and rebuilding its glycogen stores.
Adding CBD-infused protein powder or adding CBD oil into your post-workout drink is good for you, tastes delicious, and something that does not give you any sort of euphoric high.
Anti-Inflammatory and Pain-Relieving Benefits
Athletes dealing with pain caused by injury or inflammation find it difficult to stay motivated to work out. Many of them are prone to possible health risks such as gastrointestinal and cardiovascular side effects because of continuous use (and possible abuse) of over-the-counter medications. Additionally, these drugs can become very addictive to people that are gaining access to them.
Contrary to popular belief, the use of CBD can produce amazing results without becoming addictive. As a natural anti-inflammatory and painkiller, CBD can lessen pain and inflammation caused by muscle tears. Studies show that CBD can be a safer and more effective option to NSAIDS and opioid medications, which are the most commonly used drugs to deal with pain.
Anxiety and Stress Relief
It is important to know that being active requires a good headspace. It is not uncommon for athletes to suffer from stress and anxiety disorders because they are continuously participating in high-pressure activities that result in tiredness. Drinking CBD-infused smoothies can help reduce such disorders or deficiencies so that athletes can focus and perform better.
CBD can lend a helping hand in calming your nerves, helping you remain aware and focused.
Anxiety, stress, and long-term pain are the main causes of incapability to sleep or stay asleep. For athletes, getting a sufficient amount of sleep is critical to perform effectively and stay healthy. Sleep deprivation increases the chance of injury, forgetfulness, and even increased annoyance and mood swings.
Using CBD-infused products can help your body to relax, reduce anxiety symptoms, and help you fall asleep easier.
